GEO vs SEO: what Shopify merchants should know about AI search

GEO is useful as a content discipline, but it is not a universal ranking system. Start by making one important product easier to understand.

GEO usually means Generative Engine Optimization. The term describes a real need: shoppers now use AI tools to research and compare products, so brands want their information to be understood and cited accurately.

GEO is not a technical standard shared by Google, OpenAI, and every other platform. There is no common GEO ranking formula. Google Search Central says that its established SEO guidance still applies to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Sites do not need special AI files, special optimization, or dedicated Schema.org markup. Meeting the requirements still does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or display.[1]

The two are not substitutes. A page that cannot be crawled is unlikely to appear in Google's AI features because someone added GEO tactics. A technically sound page can still fail to answer a specific buying question if the content is vague.

Five information layers on a product page

1. Product identity

The title and opening should say what the product is, its category, the model or defining specification, and the main job it does. A series name alone does not identify the product.

2. Structured attributes

Keep size, material, color, capacity, compatibility, GTIN, price, and availability in stable fields. Google's Product structured data can describe price, availability, reviews, shipping, and returns. Using page markup with a Merchant Center feed can help Google understand and verify product data.[2]

3. Intended use

Explain who the product suits, where it is used, and its limits. Intent is a customer task, not a list of keywords.

4. Buying questions

Answer compatibility, setup, care, shipping, returns, and safety questions. The answers must match the product fields and store policies.

5. Authority and freshness

Keep the brand identity, source, certifications, review date, and policy pages accurate. Old or conflicting specifications make the page harder to trust.

GEO tactics to avoid

  • Repeating "AI recommended product" on the page
  • Publishing many questions that only swap keywords
  • Adding hidden copy for models
  • Claiming a special schema guarantees inclusion in AI answers
  • Using AI to invent or publish unverified product facts

Start with one high-value product today

  1. Write one sentence explaining what it is, who it is for, and the job it does.
  2. Compare the title, variants, metafields, and visible copy for missing or conflicting facts.
  3. Add three verified attributes or limits that affect a buying decision.
  4. Answer three common pre-purchase questions with facts you can support.
  5. Check that important information is visible and that structured data matches the page.

Your output is one corrected product page and a record of what changed. If the process works, use the same order on the next group of important products.

两者不是替代关系。一个没有被正常抓取和索引的页面,很难依靠所谓 GEO 技巧进入 Google AI 功能;一个技术 SEO 完整但内容模糊的页面,也可能无法回答具体购买问题。

Shopify 商品页面的五层信息

1. 产品身份

标题和首段应说明:

  • 这是什么产品
  • 属于什么类别
  • 关键型号或规格是什么
  • 解决什么主要问题

只有品牌系列名,没有产品类别,会增加理解成本。

2. 结构化属性

尺寸、材质、颜色、容量、兼容性、GTIN、价格和库存等事实,应进入稳定字段并保持一致。 Google 的 Product structured data 文档说明,商品页面可以提供价格、库存、评价、配送和退货等信息;页面结构化数据与 Merchant Center feed 同时提供时,有助于 Google理解和验证产品数据。[2]

3. 使用意图

写明适合谁、用于什么场景、有哪些限制。意图不是关键词列表,而是用户任务。

4. 购买问答

FAQ 应覆盖兼容性、安装、维护、配送、退换和安全限制。答案必须与政策及商品属性一致。

5. 权威与新鲜度

品牌身份、来源、认证、更新时间和政策页面需要真实有效。陈旧信息和相互冲突的规格会削弱可信度。

一个错误的 GEO 做法

以下做法没有可靠依据:

  • 在页面重复加入“AI 推荐产品”
  • 创建大量只替换关键词的问答
  • 添加不可见文字供模型读取
  • 声称某种专用 Schema 能保证进入 AI 回答
  • 使用 AI 批量生成未经核实的产品事实

今天先从一个高价值商品着手

不要先制定覆盖全店的 GEO 计划。今天选择一个销量高、利润高或正在投放广告的商品,完成以下检查:

  1. 用一句话写清“它是什么、适合谁、解决什么任务”
  2. 对照标题、变体、Metafields 和页面正文,找出事实缺失或冲突
  3. 补充三个会影响购买判断的真实属性或限制条件
  4. 写出三个客服最常被问到的购买前问题,并给出可核实答案
  5. 检查重要内容是否以可见文字存在,结构化数据是否与页面一致
