For: Merchants comparing Shopify tracking apps who do not want a long feature list to make the decision for them.
What you can do after reading: Build a weighted scorecard and test each candidate with your own order mix.
A tracking app is useful when it reduces customer uncertainty and repetitive work for the team. Carrier count, template count, and price matter only if they lead to clearer statuses, fewer repeated questions, and better control over cross-border tracking.
1. Write down the operating context
- Fulfilled orders per month
- Main destination countries and carriers
- Typical delivery time
- Current WISMO rate
- Whether origin or transfer events need to be hidden
- Language and branded notification needs
- Time the team can spend on setup and maintenance
Without this information, a "best app" list has little to do with your store.
2. Set the deal breakers
Remove a candidate if it cannot recognize the carriers you use, show a clear mobile status, provide a stable customer page, meet your access and data requirements, or explain exceptions. Also check whether it injects storefront code that could affect performance.
3. Score what remains
| Area | Suggested weight | Question |
|---|---|---|
| Customer tracking experience | 25% | Is the status clear and on brand? |
| Carrier and cross-border fit | 20% | Do real routes update reliably? |
| Notifications | 15% | Can you cover important events without over-messaging? |
| Exceptions and visibility | 15% | Can the app explain problems and control visible events? |
| Reporting | 10% | Can the data guide support and shipping decisions? |
| Setup and maintenance | 10% | What does installation and daily use cost the team? |
| Price | 5% | Does the total cost match the result? |
Change the weights when the business calls for it. A large cross-border store may give exceptions more weight. A small domestic store may care more about ease of use and price.
4. Test real orders
Use a delivered order, a long no-scan order, a multi-carrier transfer, a failed delivery, and a parcel marked delivered that the customer could not find. Review the merchant history, customer page, and notifications. They should tell the same story.
5. Compare the app with Shopify's built-in page
Shopify already gives customers an order status page with fulfillment and shipping updates, and merchants can adjust its branding.[1] A third-party app should add something you need: broader carrier coverage, a more flexible branded page, customer-facing milestones, visibility controls, reporting, or post-purchase recommendations.
Trial acceptance checks
- WISMO conversations fall.
- Customers understand exceptions more easily.
- Tracking visits move to one page.
- Support spends less time on each question.
- Common carriers update reliably.
- The team does not need frequent manual corrections.
BestTrack includes a branded page, notifications, custom milestones, regional visibility controls, and reporting. Test those capabilities with your own orders before deciding.
Use five orders to shorten the shortlist today
Choose one normal delivery, one stalled shipment, one transfer, one failed delivery, and one delivered-but-missing case. Check carrier recognition, customer understanding, and the next action. Record any failure as a reason to remove the app. The result is a five-order test sheet and a smaller shortlist.
